Move Your Workout To Your Shower

With work and taking care of the kids, it seems like there is never enough time to workout. We’re given workout routines for the car or at our desk but nobody ever talks about the exercise routines that you can do in the shower.  Before we get started, certain exercises aren’t for everyone whether you are doing them in the shower or in a gym.

The great thing about exercising in the shower is that because of the instability, you’ll be working out your core more and who doesn’t want that. However if the shower’s surface is slippery, please wear the right footwear. We wouldn’t want you to get hurt.

The easiest exercises are squats. A full or half squat while you’re washing your hair or lathering up done correctly with your feet shoulder width apart will activate your  quadriceps, hamstrings, and calves.  If you sit on the stool that is included with many shower models will make it easier.
Kickbacks while you’re letting your conditioner soak in for the recommended 2-5 minutes by leaning into the wall and kicking one leg up behind you, raising your heel towards the ceiling will help you get the firm booty that you always wanted. Calf raises while shampooing by rising up onto your tippy toes and lower back down to a flat footed position will sculpt calves of steel, straight out of a comic book!

We’re all time starved but that doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t take some time out every day to get and stay healthy.

Energize with a Hot Soak

It’s easy, if you want to feel energized, soak in hot water. And our bodies contain a lot of water. In a large study of males and females, the human body averaged 65% water. How does water relate to energy? Water is the most receptive element and a great receiver and conductor energy. Hot water stores a significant amount of caloric energy, which is transferred to our bodies when we bathe. Water also has a beneficial impact on blood circulation stimulating blood vessels, tired muscles and joints.

A short hot bath will decrease blood pressure, relaxing the body, soothing the nervous system, stimulating the immune system, and reducing muscle, joint or connective tissue disorders and injuries. A hot bath before going to bed will prevent headaches and improve your sleep.

In terms of a person’s mental state, a hot soak increases the production of endorphins or body’s pain killers which are associated with euphoria and happiness. Endorphins which are a group of hormones secreted within the brain and nervous system. These peptides activate the body's opiate receptors helping you feel sleepy.
Hot water has many physical and physiological benefits to those who use it wisely. Too much of a good thing can be bad in the long run and many health professionals advise against spending too much time in your bath. And you’ll come out looking like a prune!

But if you want to sleep and feel better, then soaking in water is the way to go!

Are You Afraid of Your Bathroom?

Creepy cabinets and petrified plumbing.  Blood-stained bathtubs and slimy showers. Terrified toilets and screaming sinks. For some people, Halloween doesn’t happen once a year but every day of the year. Here are some helpful tips to exorcise your bathroom from its demons.

According to Better Homes and Gardens, slow draining sinks, tubs and showers scare homeowners most. For bathroom sinks, the pro’s advice is to close the drain, fill your sink with hot boiling water and then open the drain carefully. If you’re lucky the water pressure will dislodge the debris. For tubs and showers you might have to remove the clog manually with a hanger by unscrewing the drain cover, and prying the debris out with a straightened coat hanger with a small hook at the end. If you don’t feel comfortable with this approach, call in a plumber.

Straight out of the classic horror movie Psycho, a leaky showerhead can ruin anybody’s day. Usually it’s nothing more than mineral buildup or a worn-out rubber gasket that’s seen better days. Start by finding out the cause of the problem. Remove the showerhead with a pair of pliers or a wrench; be careful to not bend the attached pipe. If the gasket is worn, you can pick up a new one at your local hardware store. But if a clogged showerhead seems to be the problem soaking it in vinegar overnight will loosen the deposits. Poking the holes with a toothpick into the showerhead’s holes and scrubbing it in the morning will remove them completely. The vinegar will also leave your new showerhead shiny and clean.

While these quick fixes might end your bathroom spook fest; you might need some help from Soak Saskatoon for the right products and accessories so that you can live happily ever after.

Choosing the Right Bathroom Sink

Top mount or undermount sinks? Wall-mount or pedestal sinks?  There is a lot of choice out there and we’ll try to break it down for you.

Before you head out the door to get that new sink (and feel free to stop by our showroom) you need to consider which bathroom (master en suite, family bathroom, powder room), who is going to use the bathroom more often and the size of the space you. You might not have the space in your powder room for a double sink but you might in your master bedroom bathroom.
A top-mount sink is the most common sink and sits in the bathroom cabinet with the rim visible. It works best in a minimalist design scheme. It can be used with any countertop material and is also less costly to install in a stone countertop, because you avoid having to polish the cutout edges, as is the case with an undermount sink.  Unfortunately you can’t wipe any spills into the sink because of the rim.

An undermount sink is installed underneath the counter with the rim flush with the countertop instead of sitting on top of it. Its clean look makes it a great fit for a high traffic family bathroom. You can clean up water spills easily but it is a more costly alternative requiring it to be installed to a stone or solid surface countertop material.

The advantage of a wall-mounted sink is that it doesn’t have any cabinets below it. Not only do you save on space but it makes the room look larger than it is. All of the plumbing must be located in the wall, there isn’t any storage space and excess water usually spills onto the floor. Ideal for the powder room; where storage isn’t a priority.

Suitable for a classic or a period oriented design, a pedestal sink hides the plumbing but the lack of any storage space under the sink or any counter space around it might not be suitable for a family bathroom.

A semi-recessed sink is the perfect alternative because it’s installed on the cabinet; providing you with some underneath storage space; perfectly suited for smaller spaces that need storage space,   Because the cabinets do not extend to the floor, it frees up additional floor space. But with limited storage space and a front of counter installation water often spills onto the floor.

If you want a statement piece a vessel sink that sits completely on top of the countertop might be the sink for you. It holds more water than most sinks but because it is higher than most other types of sinks it can be uncomfortable to use and difficult to clean.

Winterizing Your Hot Tub

Environment Canada is calling for the snow to end sometime today with total amounts in the 20 to 30 cm range. Ready or not winter is knocking on our doorstep. So how do you prepare? Snow tires ... check, snow blower … check, drain the pool … check.  What about the hot tub?
If you have a hot tub that you want to close up for the winter it starts with the realization that hot tub spas get damaged because they aren’t properly winterized.  It also costs a lot to repair them.  Don’t let it get that far.

You have to start by turning off the circuit breaker for the spa’s electrical line and even better unplug the unit. Then remove the hard thermal cover and drain out the spa by hooking a garden hose to the spa’s bottom drain spout. Make sure that you leave the bottom drain spout open when you’re finished.

After you turn off your spa heater and  replace the hard thermal cover on the spa and turn the spa’s circuit breaker back on, or plug the unit back in. If you have an air blower, let it run for approximately 30 seconds in order to blow all the water out of the air channel under the spa seats.
Remove the cover and soak up all the remaining water from inside the spa with towels or the best way possible, making sure that you get all the water out. Take out the hot tub filter and empty the water out of the filter canister compartment.
You’ll have to get the water out of the jet piping.  You can do this by blowing air through a compressor or hose into the jets. Get out of the spa and put the hard cover back on the unit. Tie down the cover to so that wind it doesn’t get flipped up by wind.
If you have an in ground or in deck hot tub, you’ll have to attach Winter Spa Cover over the hard thermal cover. One neat trick is to place the winter cover over the hard cover and lay swimming pool type water tubes around the hot tub decking which will prevent rain or water from getting into your spa over the winter.

All that’s left to do is bury your head and wait for spring. If you go through withdrawal, there are always outdoor spas.

Feng Shui for Your Bathroom

In the world of interior design, Feng Shui is hot. Feng Shui is China’s ancient art of placement of things and objects and their effect on the energy flow of the environment and their influence on personal energy flow.

Feng Shui can be applied to every room in a house, including our modern bathrooms. Energy as represented by chi or qi is the term for the universal energy, or the energy that permeates everything around us.  Chi affects our physical and mental health, relationships and level of success. A strong, vibrant flow of Chi in your home will keep nourishing your personal energy, thus allowing you to focus and achieve your personal goals.

It’s easier to implement Feng Shui principles in a new home. But if you’re renovating an older home; don’t despair; you can correct the Feng Shui of an older home. You should avoid locating your bathroom near or next to the front door because this placement drains chi the moment the energy enters the home. Likewise a second floor bathroom directly above a kitchen or front door will extinguish the fire element of your kitchen and damage the health and prosperity a kitchen's chi brings.

If you have a bathroom located near the front door hang a full length mirror on the inside of the bathroom door and place a mirror directly opposite the toilet. Fresh flowers or a bowl of pebbles on the lid of the tank represent earth and will minimize the powerful negative effects of a toilet.
If your bathroom has too much negative chi (energy) you can prevent loss of wealth by adding either a black or red bath rug around the base of the toilet. Beige, cream light blue or gray will also help the counter the effect of too much water because they draw fire.

It’s important to remember that bathroom design elements can be influenced by objects and their placement allowing you to achieve harmony with nature and your surroundings.

Enjoying Your Hot Tub this Fall

With the weatherman promising us a few nice days before another winter, here are some ways to prolong your summer and enjoy your hot tub into the autumn.

So how can you squeeze the most out of the last days of summer. The first thing that comes to mind is relaxing in your hot tub and enjoying the hot water, crisp air and nature’s color palette. A warm beverage such as a coffee, hot chocolate or warm apple cider will keep your feed your inner warmth. If your hot tub comes with a DVD player like our Midway Series or Ultimate Entertainment Spa hot tubs then a funny movie or horror story might do be the right pick. The longer Fall nights make it ideal for stargazing or even telling a ghost story or two.

Hot tubs aren’t only for those cool evenings. A dip in your hot tub to watch the sunrise before enjoying a full breakfast will help you start your day on the right foot. If you want to enjoy the sounds of nature, install a bird feeder nearby. The sights and sounds that you will enjoy in your hot tub might have to last you over the winter and there is no more beautiful a season to enjoy with than the autumn.

An Olympic Recovery with a Hot Tub

Did you notice all of those weird circles on the body of Michael Phelps and other athletes during the Olympics? If you did you probably thought that it didn’t look normal. Well Mr. Phelps and the other Olympians that used dry and wet cupping were practicing an age old therapeutic technique. Nowadays this technique is used to manipulate chi, or life-force energy, in the body. Apparently the suction expands the skin to promote blood flow in targeted areas.

Acupuncture which involves sticking thin needles in targeted areas alters pain perception, increase blood flow and prompt tight muscles to relax. Canada’s own Olympic snowboarder Mark Morris credited acupuncture for helping get over a broken rib before the 2014 games in Sochi.

You probably noticed all of the divers heading into the hot tub after their dives. The reason that they head to the hot tub is that the heated water helps keep their muscles warm and relaxed. Heat has a therapeutic effect on the body, especially relieving lower back pain. And you don’t have to jump off of a 3 meter tower to be able to enjoy the benefits of a warm hot tub.

Diagnosing Hot Tub Heater Issues

It’s a sunny day and you’re about to take a relaxing dip in your hot tub. Just as you turn it on you notice that the hot tub heater isn’t working correctly. It heats up with no problem but then seems to just die out and begins to cool cools off.  Or you turn it on and nothing happens. The hardest problem to diagnose is hot tub temperatures that go up and down. Before you pick up the phone to call your hot tub repairmen, here are a couple of common issues that you can look into.
The first thing that you should check if your hot tub isn’t staying hot is your filters to make sure there are no clogs.  While we all mean well, cleaning the filters and removing leaves etc… doesn’t always make our To-Do list.

Checking the thermostat and any heat sensors on your tub should be your next step. If they aren’t working properly, they will send the wrong signals to the heater. Water circulation can be another problem.  You should also check to make sure that that something isn’t preventing the water from circulating properly in your hot tub preventing it from heating properly and cooling while you’re in it.

Another reason that your hot tub is not heating is that the heating element is broken. If this occurs, you should turn off the hot tub immediately and call in a professional or risk causing more damage.

Finally fluctuating temperatures has to be the hardest hot tub problem to diagnose and repair. You turn on your hot tub and hop in your hot tub water and the water is freezing five minutes later. And then the water is boiling five minutes later.  A temperature sensor that is wearing out is the typical culprit but sometimes a bad thermostat or even a clogged filter can cause the problem.

Troubleshooting your hot tub heater issues isn’t always straightforward, but you can save time and money if you can determine your hot tub issues.

Beat the Heat in a Tradition Spa

Maybe it’s because a hot tub is traditionally built for 6-7 people. Or like most of our hot tubs it comes with 67 stainless jets.  Or that your friends will love your hot tub so much that they’ll make it a tradition to use yours. However the Tradition Spa got its name, it doesn’t matter, there’s nothing traditional about the Tradition Spa.

Powered by 2 x 5 Horsepower pumps, a 5.5 kW heater, a 150 sq. ft. filter system the Tradition Spa has a 460 gal (1741 l) water capacity and is everything that you would want in a hot tub and more. Extras like the twin trickle down and fan waterfalls set the mood for relaxation. The DEL-CD Ozone systems that will help keep your hot tub clean. In order to find your way around your hot tub in the dark, you’ll love the award winning sconce LED lit cabinet and 4 LED lit headrests. Options like a bistro table, Wi-Fi module and Bluetooth stereo with subwoofer for bass will get the party rocking.

When winter rolls around you’ll benefit from our winter insulation package and 5” locking winter cover. As the summers get hotter you can’t bring AC, then you might want to look into getting a Traditional Spa for your backyard.

The Do’s and Don’ts of Hot Tub Water Maintenance

We all love our hot tubs but if we want them to last forever, we have to take care of them. Ongoing regular maintenance involves regularly cleaning the cover and filter of your, monitoring the chemical levels. If your chemical levels are incorrect your spa equipment will rust.  Chemical levels that are too low will lead to a hot tub full of bacteria’s. Yuck!!

In order to test your hot tub’s chemical levels, you’ll have to buy test strips that cost around $7 and test everything from total alkalinity, calcium hardness, chlorine, pH, bromine, to total hardness. The important thing to remember is that when adding chemical to your hot tub, you should add one chemical to the water, and then wait a full two hours before adding another chemical which will is better for a more even distribution and minimizes the risk of a chemical reactions between the additives that can cause problems. Keeping your spa water running and keep the cover off for at least 15 minutes after you have added your chemicals is also important for proper chemical dispersion.

Soak’s hot tubs usually come with an Ozonator which is the most powerful oxidizer and disinfectant that can be safely used in spas. It kills all known bacteria, viruses and yeasts. You’ll have to check it regularly to see that it’s working properly. Also, we suggest using a water conditioner that will provide you with silky soft, balanced spa/hot tub water and eliminating the need for excessive chemicals.

Keeping your spa water clean will ensure that everyone enjoys your hot tub.

Ancient civilizations used music in their traditional daily activities while in today’s world; music is used for entertainment as well as reducing stress. When you need to relax, a great royalty free online music source that you can stream mellow music to your hot tub is Melody Loops
(http://www.melodyloops.com/music-for/spa/). It’s been proven scientifically that low level ambient music gets our creative juices flowing, and doesn’t overwhelm us like loud music.

Not to say that loud music doesn’t have its place too. Researchers at Manchester University found that stated that loud music stimulates part of the ear known as the sacculus, which responds to musical beats and stimulates the brain, making you feel good during and after listening. Hot tubs are for partying too.

Whatever you listen to, bring music to your hot tub experience – your body will thank you.

Clearing up the Cloudy Water in Your Hot Tub

It’s Friday and you want to take a quick dip in your hot tub tonight. But after taking a look at that cloudy water, you change your mind. There are many reasons why your hot tub water looks murky such as:
·         - Water imbalances
·         - Lack of sanitizers
·         - Too many contaminants such as soaps or shampoos
·         - Clogged or worn out filter
·         - High TDS (total dissolved solids) caused by water that is older than 3-4 months

So how can you fix these problems? The first two problems can be easily remedied by testing your water with test strips and adding chemicals to correct the imbalances and restore the right amount of sanitizers.

Excessive levels of hair shampoos and body soaps can be prevented if everybody showers before entering the hot tub. You can shock your water and use a natural clarifier to clear-up the cloudiness.
A clogged or worn out filter can put additional strain on your spa pump causing it to wear out prematurely. Filters should be rinsed every 2-4 weeks and changed annually.

If you don’t change your water every 3-4 months, total dissolved solids accumulate causing cloudiness.  The only solutions for this problem is to flush, drain and refill your tub. Don’t forget to flush they system and change the filter or the cloudiness will come back.

A little preventative and regular maintenance can go a long way in making sure that you have clean and cloudless water in your hot tub.

Get the Most Out of Your Dynasty Sofa Set

When it comes to picking the right backyard patio or sofa set, it can be a challenge. If you get a two or four seat set, you’re always looking for extra seating when the neighbors or family come over.  And when you finally have enough mismatched chairs and furniture, it just doesn’t feel right.

The other challenge is having enough tables to put on all of those great summer drinks. While people tend to put there drinks down on the ground, there are always a few glasses that get broken unintentionally.  And most sets come with chairs and a small coffee table but that’s it. The Dynasty Sofa Set comes with a four foot (1.28 m) coffee table and two eighteen inch (457mm) end tables.

The good thing about the Dynasty Sofa Set from Soak is that there is so much of it. A sofa that comfortably seats three, not one but two arm chairs and a five foot (1.75 m) lounger that works just as well for one then it would for three. It’s available in nut brown or classic black this set will go with almost any gazebo. You’ll stay cool in the red fabric and cushions. If you’re in the market for a great

Building the Ideal Hot Tub Deck

So you just bought yourself a hot tub and you want to install it on your deck.  What materials should you use? How much should you use?  Where should it be positioned? The ideal location for your hot tub is to have it built on a flat surface such as a 3-1/2”-4”concrete slab but you might need a bigger piece of concrete for a larger hot tub. The structure needs to support the tub’s dry weight plus the water capacity and the number of occupants multiplied by their weight.

So if you take the 50 sq. ft. Reflex Hot Tub that has a dry weight of 908 lbs and can hold 390 gallons of water (1 gallon = 8.3 lbs), seats 5-7 people weighing on average 190 lbs., you’ll need a structure that can support (908 lbs x 3237 lbs + (7 people x 190 lbs) = 5475 lbs or 2483.4 kg. Now if you would like to know how many pounds per square foot does the deck have to be able to support its 5475 lbs. /50 sq. ft. = 109.5 lbs. per square foot. The deck must be designed to hold 109.5 lbs. per square foot or 49.668 kg.

If the deck is elevated, you will most likely have to submit a proper design to your municipal authority. Before picking out a spot for your hot tub take into consideration the wind and sun as well privacy from neighbors. Traffic flow is also important.  Build a sturdy deck for your hot tub with a good location and enjoy your new hot tub!

Dos and Don’ts of Hot Tub Maintenance

If you’re just re-opening your hot tub for the season or your hot tub has been in operation all winter, hot tum maintenance is an inescapable of hot tub ownership. Like it or not you’ll have to take care of your hot tub if you want it to take care of you.

The first maintenance tip is to replace your spa filter every year. If you use bromine or peroxide sanitizers or natural enzymes derived from plant and mineral extracts; the spa filter must be replaced annually. To keep a sand filter working, depending on the size of the filter you must clean it as often as once a week.  If you live in an area where there is hard water is hard or high levels of calcium levels, cleaning out the cartridge with vinegar and water will prevent crystals from building up around the jets and filters.

Another maintenance tip for removing grimy buildup is to put baking soda on a wet sponge, removing dirt and grime without harming the surface of the hot tub. Shocking the hot tub with a non-chlorine shock once every week will go help keep the water clear. Finally, keeping the right pH level for the water in your hot tub should be a big concern since pH imbalance is a major contributing factor to the development of microorganisms; you may want to take additional care to maintain the pH balance of the water. You may maintain a 7.2-7.4 pH range but it’s really up to you. If you do use tap water loaded with cloramines, metals, and minerals, you might want to purify the water with a spa pre-filter.

Make the Most Out of Your Small Backyard

So you didn’t think that you needed a big backyard when you bought your house because you didn’t think that you would use it? You don’t have to regret your decision but you embrace your small space and make it look bigger than it is.

1)     One thing you can do is strategically lay your pavers or decking in a diagonal pathway to create the illusion of a space being larger than it really is. Straight walkways have a tendency to leave little to the imagination. Planting tall plants maximizes the little gardening space that you have.
2)     You can use bright colors such as red, orange or yellow near the entry to create an attention-getting entrance; letting the rest of the yard fade into the background. A red wooden fence door or hanging a yellow sun decoration might do the trick.
3)     The key to creating a feeling of larger space is by creatively positioning your furniture. Creating an outdoor room with a well-arranged patio set, grill, fountain or fire pit will make the space cozy and personal

Think outside the box and get creative with your backyard getaway. Canadian summers don’t last that long so enjoy them while they’re here!

Getting Fit in Your Hot Tub

While many of us get in our hot tub to relax, some multitaskers like to combine their leisure time with a little exercise. Here are some great exercises to get a great workout in your hot tub.

For many years fitness gurus have been advocating the use of exercises that focus on the core muscle groups to blast away fat and improve performance. Walking or jogging in your hot tub works your abdominal and lower back muscles. Another great exercise is the bicycle. Rest your elbows on a pool noodle or on the edge of the pool to work out your core, shoulders and legs.

The double leg lift improves muscle control while working on your abs. By leaning back on the pool edge, lower your legs straight down and then raise them while keeping them perfectly straight and together.

Need to work your back and thigh muscles, hot tub jumping jacks might be the exercise for you. Not only do you have to elevate your body while working against the water’s resistance but you have to keep your balance as your natural buoyancy will lead you to tip forward or back. Jump your legs out as you normally would but don't let your feet touch the bottom when you bring them back to the center.

Feel like working out those arms then try some underwater bicep curls. The added resistance from the water will make you work harder lifting and lowering your weights. Many athletes who wish to regain their full range of motion are using Aqualogix bells which are attached to the wrists and ankles leveraging hydro-kinetic techniques to drive performance.

It doesn’t have to cost a lot to get fit in your hot tub and it’s an excellent way to stay in shape!

Which Sink is Right for Your Bathroom?

While the bathroom sink is often an overlooked feature in a bathroom, like every other fixture in your bathroom, when it doesn’t look right, it can stand out for the wrong reasons. Bathroom sinks come in various shapes (oval, rectangular etc…), materials (porcelain, ceramic, marble drop in etc. ….) and designs (self-rimming, undermount, drop-in etc…) so which one is the best for your bathroom?

Your decision will most likely be based on your personal preferences. If you don’t like the look of a square sink, it’s going to be hard to convince you differently.  Of course the type of sink that you will choose will depend on the type of bathroom cabinet that you have. Not all sinks are created equally and some of them may not be your cup of tea.

The best sink for your bathroom depends on cost, functionality and design. Cost will always be a major consideration.  If the sink is made of marble or glass, it will cost more than a porcelain or ceramic sink.  Functionality can be measured by the size and depth of the sink. It has to be deep enough or hold enough water for your needs. Nobody likes a sink that overflows. Then there is design. Does the sink fit with the overall design of the bathroom? Is it too traditional or too futuristic? Will it look good if you change the bathroom’s paint color?

At Soak Saskatoon we carry a wide range of sinks in different sizes, shapes and designs.. Just bring us a picture or video of your bathroom and we’ll be happy to help guide you so that you make the right choice.
