While we celebrate females and their
achievements annually on March 8th, better known as International
Women’s Day, honouring women’s contributions should be an ongoing celebration
and not an annual event.
Canada’s theme this year “Women’s
Empowerment Leads to Equality” is focused on women having the tools necessary
to make better choices. The rationale behind this theme is that when empowered
women make choices that meet their own needs and those of their families, the
world becomes a better place for everyone. Now where would any of us be without
our grandmothers, mothers, sisters, cousins and daughters?
Women have impacted Canadian life in so
many ways, from politicians such as Agnes McPhail to artists such as Emily Carr
to the first female professor Carrie Derick to our first female astronaut Julie
Payette, Canadian women have played an integral in blazing trails empowering
women in our country. Where would we be without Nahnebahwequay who championed
Native rights or Jenny Trout, Canada’s first legally licensed doctor?
While they have come a long way, the journey
is far from complete. The gender inequality gap in regards to equal pay, women
in executive management roles and political leadership is larger than ever. So
as we salute those women who have made our country great, let us take note that
there is so much more that we can accomplish if we work together.
